Wetland Diversity
Discover the range of wetland ecosystems found across Kerala and their ecological characteristics.
Explore the rich diversity of Kerala's wetlands, understand the ecological importance of these water ecosystems, and learn about the major threats affecting their health and long-term conservation.
About the event
Kerala is characterised by a diverse range of wetland ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, backwaters, ponds, marshes, mangroves and other freshwater and brackish-water habitats. These ecosystems support rich biodiversity, provide habitats for aquatic plants, fish, birds and other wildlife, and contribute to water regulation, flood mitigation, groundwater recharge and the livelihoods of local communities.
However, wetlands across the state face increasing pressure from land-use change, encroachment, pollution, altered water flow, unsustainable resource use, invasive alien species and the wider impacts of climate change. Such pressures can affect water quality, habitat structure, ecological processes and the biodiversity associated with these ecosystems.
This webinar, organised by the Tropical Biodiversity Action and Research Centre (TBARC India), aims to introduce participants to the diversity and ecological significance of Kerala's wetlands and encourage informed discussion on the threats affecting these water ecosystems. The programme will provide a platform to strengthen awareness, share knowledge and highlight the importance of science-based conservation and public participation.
Webinar focus: Wetland diversity, ecosystem services, threats to aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity conservation and the role of public awareness in protecting wetlands.
